On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. This day is for rest, gear preparation, and settling in before the climb begins.
Depending on your arrival time, you may also have time to relax and prepare for the adventure ahead.
Meals: Bed & Breakfast or as arranged
Today is dedicated to your climb briefing and gear check. You will meet your mountain guide, review the route, check your equipment, and make final preparations for the trek.
A proper briefing is an important part of the climb because it helps you understand the route, the pace, and the acclimatization strategy for the days ahead.
Meals: Breakfast
After breakfast, you will drive to Londorossi Gate for registration, then continue to the trailhead to begin the trek. The first section of the Lemosho Route takes you through lush rainforest, where the trail is quiet, green, and rich in natural beauty.
This first day is a gentle introduction to the mountain. The forest environment feels very different from the higher zones that will follow, and it gives the climb a beautiful beginning. By late afternoon, you will reach Mti Mkubwa Camp, where you will have dinner and spend the night.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Today you leave the rainforest behind and continue into the moorland zone. As you gain altitude, the scenery opens up and the route begins to reveal wide views of the mountain and surrounding landscape.
This stage gives you your first real sense of Kilimanjaro’s scale. The vegetation becomes lower, the air cooler, and the terrain more open. You will arrive at Shira 1 Camp in the afternoon and have time to rest and enjoy the changing scenery.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After breakfast, you continue across the Shira Plateau, one of the most beautiful high-altitude areas on Kilimanjaro. This day is not overly long, which helps with acclimatization and gives you time to walk steadily and allow your body to adjust.
The scenery here is broad and dramatic, with open moorland, volcanic views, and a growing sense of altitude. One of the strengths of the Lemosho Route is that it offers a longer and more gradual build-up, which many climbers prefer. The Lemosho Route starts on the western slope and is commonly offered as a 7- or 8-day route, with the longer version favored for acclimatization.
You will overnight at Shira 2 Camp.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
This is one of the most important acclimatization days on the route. You will climb higher toward Lava Tower, then descend to Barranco Camp for the night. This pattern of climbing high and sleeping lower is a key reason why longer Kilimanjaro routes are often preferred.
The terrain becomes more rugged and more dramatic, with alpine desert surroundings and a clear feeling of being deep in high mountain country. Reaching Lava Tower is often a memorable point of the journey, both because of the altitude and the stark beauty of the landscape. After spending time at higher elevation, you descend to Barranco Camp beneath the impressive Barranco Wall.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After breakfast, you will climb the famous Barranco Wall. Although it looks steep from below, it is not a technical climb, and with the support of your guides it is manageable for most trekkers. Once above the wall, the views are excellent and the sense of progress is very rewarding.
You then continue across a rugged but beautiful section of the mountain toward Karanga Camp. This is a shorter trekking day, which is helpful for recovery and continued acclimatization before the summit push.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Today you climb to Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit attempt. The environment becomes more exposed and more severe, with high-altitude alpine desert all around you.
Once at Barafu, you will rest, have an early dinner, and prepare for the summit push, which begins during the night. This is an important psychological stage of the climb, as it marks the final step before summit day.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Just after midnight, you begin the most demanding and most rewarding stage of the trek. You will climb slowly toward the crater rim and then continue to Uhuru Peak, the summit of Kilimanjaro at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa.
Reaching the summit is a major achievement and the emotional high point of the entire journey. After spending time at the top, you will descend back to Barafu for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for overnight.
This is the longest day on the mountain, but also the one that brings the reward of standing on Africa’s highest peak.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After breakfast, you continue descending through the forest to Mweka Gate, where the climb officially ends. You will complete exit formalities and receive your summit certificate if successful.
You will then be transferred back to your hotel for a hot shower, a proper rest, and a chance to celebrate the achievement.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
