On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. This day is for rest and settling in after your journey, while also giving you time to prepare mentally for the climb ahead.
Depending on your arrival time, you may have time to organize your gear and relax before your pre-climb briefing.
Meals: Bed & Breakfast or as arranged
Today is dedicated to preparation. You will meet your mountain guide for a full climb briefing, route explanation, and equipment check. This is an important part of the experience because it helps ensure you are properly prepared and understand the rhythm of the climb.
The Marangu Route is especially well known because it is the only Kilimanjaro route with hut accommodation, making it attractive for climbers who prefer not to camp.
You will spend the night at your hotel in Moshi before starting the climb the following day.
Meals: Breakfast
After breakfast, you will drive to Marangu Gate for registration, where the climb officially begins. The first day of trekking takes you through lush rainforest, with thick vegetation, birdlife, and a cool mountain atmosphere creating a beautiful start to the journey.
This forest section feels alive and fresh, and it gives you the sense of slowly entering Kilimanjaro’s different ecological zones. Along the way, there is also the possibility of seeing blue monkeys or colobus monkeys in the trees. By late afternoon, you will arrive at Mandara Hut, your first overnight stop on the mountain.
TANAPA’s Kilimanjaro guide notes Mandara Huts and Maundi Crater as attractions on the Marangu Route.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After breakfast, you will continue your trek out of the rainforest and into the moorland zone. As the vegetation changes, the trail becomes more open and the views begin to widen, giving you a greater sense of the mountain’s size and beauty.
This stage is one of the most visually rewarding parts of the lower mountain because it introduces you to a very different landscape from the forest below. The route to Horombo Hut feels more spacious, with giant lobelias, open slopes, and broad views that become more impressive as you gain altitude.
You will arrive at Horombo Hut in the afternoon, where you will rest and overnight.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Today is an important acclimatization day. Rather than climbing too quickly, you will spend an extra day at Horombo to give your body more time to adjust to the altitude. This added day is one of the reasons many operators offer the Marangu Route as a longer itinerary, because extra acclimatization can improve comfort and summit chances. Many trekking operators and route guides specifically recommend the 6-day Marangu climb rather than the shorter 5-day version for this reason.
You may take a short acclimatization walk to a higher elevation during the day and then return to Horombo Hut to rest. This helps your body prepare for the higher camps ahead while keeping the day manageable.
The extra day also gives you time to enjoy the scenery and recover before continuing upward.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After breakfast, you leave the moorland behind and move into the alpine desert zone. The scenery changes once again, becoming drier, more rugged, and more exposed. This part of the mountain feels much more remote and dramatic, and by this stage the reality of the summit attempt begins to feel close.
The trek to Kibo Hut is steady and requires patience, but it is also a very important step in preparing for summit night. On arrival at Kibo, you will have an early dinner and rest as much as possible before the midnight ascent.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
This is summit day, the most demanding and most rewarding part of the climb. You will begin around midnight, trekking slowly in the darkness toward Gilman’s Point and then onward to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895 metres. TANAPA identifies Uhuru Peak as the summit of Kilimanjaro and Africa’s highest point.
Reaching the summit is a deeply memorable moment and the emotional high point of the trek. After spending a short time at the top for photos and celebration, you will begin the long descent back to Horombo Hut.
This is the longest and toughest day on the route, but also the one that brings the reward of standing on the roof of Africa.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After breakfast, you will descend through the moorland and forest zones back to Marangu Gate, where the climb officially ends. This final stretch gives you time to reflect on the achievement and enjoy the last part of the mountain environment.
At the gate, you will complete exit formalities and receive your summit certificate if successful. You will then be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower, rest, and celebration.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
