Your safari begins with an early pick-up in Dar es Salaam, followed by the journey to Mikumi National Park. One of the reasons this package is so attractive is its convenience. TANAPA notes that Mikumi’s closeness to Dar es Salaam makes it ideal for weekend visitors and short safaris, while the park’s official page places it along the Dar–Mbeya highway, about 300 km west of the city.
As you arrive and enter the park, your first game drive begins. Mikumi is known for its open plains, scenic savannah, and good general wildlife viewing. TANAPA highlights the park’s “superbly scenic plains and baobabs,” and notes that a variety of wildlife can be seen relatively easily.
During your drive, you may encounter elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, wildebeests, impalas, and many bird species. Depending on luck and wildlife movement, you may also see predators such as lions. After your afternoon safari, you will continue to your lodge or camp for dinner and overnight.
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
After breakfast, you will head out for a full day game drive in Mikumi National Park. This gives you enough time to explore the park more deeply and enjoy the variety of habitats and wildlife that make Mikumi one of the most popular parks in southern Tanzania. TANAPA officially describes Mikumi as one of Tanzania’s most popular national parks because of its accessibility and attractive safari setting.
A full day in the park allows your guide to cover more ground and follow recent wildlife movement. The broad plains create a classic safari feel, and the open terrain can make wildlife easier to spot than in denser bush areas. You may see herds grazing across the plains, giraffes moving between acacia trees, elephants feeding, and birdlife throughout the day. The park’s scenery itself is also part of the experience, with baobabs and wide landscapes giving Mikumi a very photogenic character.
You will enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush and continue your game drive into the afternoon before returning to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After breakfast, and depending on your departure timing, you will enjoy a final morning game drive or a relaxed start before beginning the return journey to Dar es Salaam. This last safari session gives you one more chance to enjoy the park and perhaps spot animals you may not have seen earlier.
Later, you will drive back to Dar es Salaam, arriving with unforgettable memories of a short but rewarding wildlife experience. Mikumi is especially well-suited to this type of trip because TANAPA promotes it as an accessible park that offers a true safari while saving valuable travel time.
